What are types of headache?

Headache is a disease and simultaneously a symptom of some other diseases. It is so wide ranged in its pain inflicting property that finding headache remedies needs a wide range of research. There are usually three types of headache known as ‘Tension Headache’, Cluster Headache, and’ Migraine’.

Shakespeare, in the famous tragedy ‘Othello’ mentions of Othello’s headache (most probably tension headache) which Desdemona’ tries to assuage with the handkerchief, in response thrown away by Othello on account of the deep rooted jealousy.

Symptoms of headache

Headache normally starts from a change in mood, facial expression change, or facial skin color change. Feeling of light pain, usually in the area of forehead is the early indication. Unless some timely preventive or corrective action is taken, the intensity of pain may increase. Some types, particularly migraine is debilitating.

This is the starting and only stage when migraine can be aborted through usage of appropriate drug and immediate corrective and preventive action. Having once entered into the next stage, migraine is simply uncontrollable and the pain rises to the peak, debilitating you completely.

Ergot tartrate (cafergot, Migril) is perhaps the only known remedy of migraine up to now. Ergot is an alkaloid (a class of chemicals, usually poisonous) extracted from a fungus rot of wheat. Ergot tartrate taken on time, just at the onset of migraine, aborts the attack to the comfort of the sufferer.
Migraine inflicts a very hammering, throbbing type of severe pain and in case of unavailability of Ergot Tartrate (which can not be used without prescription) cold compressing helps. Jel-pack taken out of freezer and kept on eyes, forehead too is helpful.

Headache remedies

  • As mentioned earlier, Ergot tartrate, if prescribed by a physician may be a very good treatment for migraine.
  • Avoid using ,over the counter drugs like aspirin and other NSAIDs. Aspirin tends to thin the blood and in case of elevated blood pressure, its use may aggravate the condition. Some natural headache remedies may be very beneficial.
  • Let the patient rest in calm, dark and fairly cool environment. Apply cold compresses in case the environment is too hot and humid.
  • Keep the patient well hydrated.
  • Fresh lime, served with black pepper and a pinch of salt (when the patient is not hypertensive), prevents nausea, increases blood circulation and relieves pain.
  • Massage on scalp and back of the neck is a sure comfort.
  • Application of pressure on forehead and both sides too helps
  • Usage of calcium supplement is recommended for headache. Lime, lemon, orange or grapefruit juice keeps the patient hydrated and relives headache by dint of increased blood circulation.
  • Some foods like, Processed Cheddar cheese, Dark chocolate, coffee etc. may trigger migraine, therefore should be avoided.
  • Hot shower in winters or extreme cold weather, relieves head ache.
